Thanksgiving is a time of celebration with family and friends. Unfortunately, it is historically one of the holidays with the highest rate of drunk driving incidents in the United States.

This year the popular ride-sharing app Uber has teamed up with the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organization to offer free rides in multiple areas throughout New York City in an effort to prevent intoxicated driving over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Read below to learn more about this year’s partnership and where you can get free rides as part of the promotion.

Free Uber Rides On Long Island Thanksgiving Eve

Statistically speaking, both Nassau County and Suffolk County have some of the highest rates of drunk driving incidents in the State of New York.

A spokesperson from the popular ride-sharing company Uber has announced that the company has teamed up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to offer free rides across Long Island on Wednesday, November 22.

According to the press release, individuals with the Uber app will be able to use the promo code “SAFERIDELI” in the app to get two free rides anywhere in Nassau County and Suffolk County this Thanksgiving Eve.

Each ride will be limited to a maximum value of $15, but if the ride ends up costing more than $15 then the rider will simply responsible to pay the difference.

In order to qualify for the free ride promotion the trip must begin and end on Long Island between 9:00 p.m. on November 22 (Thanksgiving Eve) and 3:00 a.m. on November 23 (Thanksgiving Day).

“With more transportation options in Suffolk County than ever before, there is no excuse to get behind the wheel after a night of drinking,” Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone was quoted as saying in a press release sent out by MADD and Uber on Monday. “I support efforts such as these that incentivize residents to stay off the road, and this Thanksgiving Eve, I urge everyone to enjoy themselves safely, responsibly, and plan ahead.”

Underage DUI Arrest In New York

Drivers throughout the nation often go out without expecting to consume alcohol, but end up drinking when they are out anyway. Additionally, many individuals end up driving after consuming alcohol because they underestimate their level of intoxication. As a result, many individuals end up driving while intoxicated when they never planned on doing so in the first place.

By providing alternative modes of transportation to residents across Long Island, both Uber and MADD hope to prevent individuals from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming too much alcohol.

“The need for alternative transportation during the busy holiday season is vital as it helps those who have been drinking make responsible choices,” Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory said. “Acting responsibly is a choice and I am hopeful that this initiative will result in fewer alcohol-related accidents and lead to a happy and safe holiday season.”

Staten Island Residents Get Two Free Rides On Thanksgiving Eve Too

Pouring Draft Beer At BarStaten Island Borough President James Oddo and District Attorney Michael E McMahon announced a similar initiative called “SI Safe Ride” which is meant to prevent drunk driving incidents on Staten Island over Thanksgiving Eve this year.

According to the announcement, individuals on Staten Island will be able to use the promo code “SISAFERIDE” in the Uber app to get two free rides between 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22 (Thanksgiving Eve) and 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 23 (Thanksgiving Day) this year.

Just like the Long Island promotion mentioned above, each Uber ride using the “SISAFERIDE” promo code will be limited to a maximum value of $15. However, if a ride happens to cost more than $15 then the rider will just be responsible to pay for the difference. Additionally, in order to qualify for the free ride promotion the ride must start and end on Staten Island.

“We don’t want a single person getting behind the wheel of a car drunk,” Oddo said. “The night before Thanksgiving is traditionally a big party night where we make bad decisions. Through this partnership we want Staten Islanders to know that if they are planning on drinking that night, they have easy access to a ride both to their destination and back home.”
