Long Island Woman Charged With Drunk Driving & Leandra’s Law Violations

A Long Island woman was arrested on DWI charges and Leandra’s Law violations after crashing her vehicle in Ronkonkoma, NY.

Suffolk County Police say the 50-year-old mother was driving eastbound on Express Drive South with her 8-year-old son in the vehicle on Monday, December 26th, when she swerved to avoid hitting a dog in the road. The vehicle went off the road, crashing into a wire fence and a tree before coming to a stop.

Suffolk County police officers arrived on the scene of the accident and arrested the woman on drunk driving charges.

The woman will also be charged with aggravated DWI with a child passenger, as well as endangering the welfare of a child because her 8-year-old son was in the vehicle.

Woman Arrested For DUI After Officer Leaps Into Moving Car On LIE To Save Toddler

A 37-year-old woman was arrested for driving while intoxicated after a Suffolk County police officer leaped into a dangerously slow moving car on the Long Island Expressway.

According to reports, officer Joe Gross noticed the woman driving eastbound on the Long Island Expressway at approximately 20mph and approached the side of the vehicle where he saw a toddler in the back seat.

The officer signaled for the woman to pull her vehicle over to the side of the road, but the woman replied that she couldn’t pull over.

Suspecting that the driver was under the influence of drugs, officer Gross sped ahead of her vehicle and pulled over to the side of the road. The woman was able to slow down to about 5mph and officer Gross jumped into the passenger-side window of her vehicle to help her stop.

“All your training says, don’t go into a moving car, and I didn’t like the idea of it, but when the window of opportunity was there, and her speed is so slow, I jumped at it,” said Gross. “I’m fortunate it worked out the way it did.”

The woman was arrested on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs, aggravated DWI with a child passenger 15 years or younger and endangering the welfare of a child.
