November 22, 2017 – Uber Teams Up With Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) To Offer Free Rides On Long Island For Thanksgiving Eve
Thanksgiving Eve is a night that is known to have a higher rate of DUI-related incidents based on historical statistics. The popular ride-sharing app Uber has teamed up with Mother Against Drunk Driving to offer free rides over Thanksgiving Eve in an effort to prevent drunk driving and reduce the number of DWI incidents this year. The company is offering free rides on Long Island and Staten Island with special promotion codes.
October 22, 2017 – Drunk Driver Crashes After Driving Wrong Way The On Long Island Expressway
A 27-year-old woman was arrested for driving under the influence after crashing her vehicle on the Long Island Expressway early this morning. According to Suffolk County police, the woman was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of the LIE at approximately 5:00 a.m. when she crashed head-on into another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. She was taken to St. Catherine of Sienna Medical Center to be treated for injuries sustained in the accident while the driver and passenger in the other vehicle were taken to Huntington Hospital.
September 29, 2017- Driver With DUI Conviction Kills Passengers And Himself
Recently, a bus driver ran a red light in New York City and crashed into another bus. The crash killed him and two other people. The bus driver had a history of accidents and had been previously convicted of drunk driving, however, he was legally allowed to drive under federal rules. Federal rules allow for one strike before banning a driver for life. Under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, a driver who is convicted of certain crimes like driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can legally have their license suspended for up to a year. After that year is up they can go back to work. In this incident, however, the rules cost two people’s lives.
August 17, 2017- Off-Duty NYPD Cop Charged With DWI On Long Island
An off-duty NYPD cop was recently arrested for driving drunk on Long Island after she flipped her SUV with her 8-year-old son in the back. It was reported that she lost control of her car at a U-turn on the Robert Moses causeway. She had a split lip but fortunately, her son was not injured. The off-duty officer is an 11-year NYPD vet and was charged with DWI and suspended without pay.
July 28, 2017- Grandmother Arrested For DUI With Grandson In The Car
A grandmother from Coram was recently arrested and charged with drunk driving under Leandra’s Law. Suffolk County police stated that the grandmother crashed into a parked SUV. She had her 11-year-old grandson in the car with her. Fortunately, no-one was injured in the car crash. When police responded to the car accident they determined that the 56-year-old grandmother was intoxicated. She was arrested and charged with Leandra’s Law violation. Under law, it is a felony to drive drunk with a child under 16-years-old in the car.
June 20, 2017- Passenger Seriously Injured In DWI Crash
A woman from Miller Place was recently arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree vehicular assault. The woman drove drunk and ended up crashing her SUV into a utility pole in Freeport. Her passenger suffered a serious head injury while she suffered minor abrasions. The 22-year-old passenger was not wearing her seatbelt and was thrown into the back cargo area of the Jeep and struck her head.
May 26, 2017- Brooklyn Lawyer Sentenced For DWI On Long Island Expressway
A Brooklyn lawyer was recently sentenced to one to three years in prison for driving drunk on the Long Island Expressway. The man crashed his car and killed a 21-year-old man on the Expressway. The Brooklyn lawyer pleaded guilty to manslaughter, assault, driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired under the influence of drugs and alcohol. According to police reports, the 36-year-old man was driving his BMW eastbound on the Expressway when he crashed into another BMW that had slowed down to avoid a two-vehicle crash in Plainview.
April 24, 2017- Riverhead Man Runs Away From Officers After A DWI Crash
A man from Riverhead was charged with DWI after fleeing from a Suffolk police officer. The man reportedly crashed his car into gas pumps at a Patchogue service station. Suffolk police identified the man as a 20-year-old male driving a 2003 Nissan who was driving at a high-speed rate. It is currently unclear when the man will be taken to court for his fleeing the scene of an accident as well as driving under the influence.
March 16, 2017- Long Island Mom Crashes Car While Driving Drunk With Her 9-Year-Old Son
A Long Island mother has been arrested for driving drunk and crashing her car with her 9-year-old son in the vehicle. The son suffered minor injuries and was released to another family member, according to police. The mother was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child. The 49-year-old mom is expected to be arraigned in Central Islip. It was not immediately known whether or not the mother suffered minor or serious injuries in the accident.
February 28, 2017- NYC Sanitation Worker Arrested For Drunk Driving
A New York City sanitation worker was arrested for drunken driving after he was involved in an accident in Staten Island. The 38-year-old worker refused to take a breath test after police were called to the fender bender he caused on New Dorp Lane near Richmond Road in New Dorp.The other motorist suffered back and neck pain and was transported to a local hospital.
January 31, 2017- Man Crashes Into 5 Cars Outside Long Island Restaurant
A 39-year-old driver was arrested and charged with DWI after he crashed his car into five cars in a parking lot outside a Long Island Restaurant. It was reported that the driver was attempting to drive out of the parking lot when his car struck five other parked vehicles. According to witnesses, the driver had passed out in his car with his foot on the accelerator. There were no injuries reported and it was not immediately known whether the driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs.
December 21, 2016- Woman Arrested For DWI After Crashing Into A Tree
A Centereach woman was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Police arrested the woman after she crashed into a tree and left her passenger seriously injured. The injured passenger was taken to Stony Brook University with critical injuries and police arraigned the driver on drunk driving charges.
November 17, 2016- 30-Year-Old Woman Caught Driving Drunk At 90MPH
A Suffolk County Sheriff stopped a 30-year-old woman who was driving in the wrong direction at 90 miles per hour on the Long Island Expressway in Holtsville. The woman was spotted and pursued for about 45 seconds after police stated that they passed nearly 20 vehicles before she pulled over. According to authorities, the woman had a “glassy look”. She stated she had had two beers to drink but she could not explain why she was driving west instead of east. She was charged with DWI and reckless endangerment.
October 27, 2016- Speeding Drunk Driver Splits Another Car In Half On Long Island
A speeding drunk driver crashed into another car on Long Island and caused the car to split in half. The 27-year-old drunk Mercedes-Benz driver collided with a Mazda Maita in Rockville Centre. The impact from the accident caused the Mercedes to overturn and left the back of the Mazda cut off. Fortunately, no one suffered any life-threatening injuries in the crash. The Mercedes driver suffered head and leg injuries and the driver of the Mazda suffered internal injuries. The 27-year-old was arrested and charged with DWI, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, assault, and criminal mischief.
September 8, 2016- Drunk Driver Heads Towards Oncoming Long Island Expressway Traffic
A drunk Queens driver was caught on Long Island when he was driving eastbound on the westbound side of the Long Island Expressway. The 23-year-old driver ended up with various charges including drunk driving, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving below the minimum posted speed limit. A number of motorists called 911 to report the incident of someone driving eastbound on the westbound lanes. Highway patrol cops pulled him over and took him into custody. His arraignment is pending.
August 30, 2016- Pickup Truck Driver Charged With DWI After Crashing Outside A Restaurant
In Centerport, Long Island a man was recently arrested after he crashed into several parked cars outside of a restaurant. The driver of the car was a 53-year-old man from Centerport who was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated. The man was driving a 2007 Toyota Tundra heading westbound when his pickup truck left the roadway and crashed into nine parked cars. The driver tried to run away from the scene of the accident but was caught by restaurant goers until the police arrived and arrested him. He was held on $15,000 bail.
June 28, 2016-Driver Accused Of DWI In 3-Car Crash On Long Island
On Sunday, June 26, 2016, a 34-year-old man was arrested on drunken driving charges after he crashed into a family driving on Long Island. The crash killed the wife in the car and badly injured the husband who was driving. The accident took place on Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station. The driver of the car that caused the crash was allegedly speeding when his vehicle crashed into the other family’s car at a stoplight. The 34-year-old driver was charged with DWI and he allegedly stated to police that he had five beers at his job earlier in the night. He failed a field sobriety test.
May 31, 2016- Long Island Man Crashes Into 2 Police Cars While Intoxicated
Police arrested a Long Island man who was driving while intoxicated after he crashed his car into two police cars in Shirley. One of the officers was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle had five passengers in his car at the time of the crash and one of his passengers was seriously injured, while the other three passengers suffered minor injuries.
