Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over LogoLaw enforcement officers throughout the State of New York are preparing to crack down on drunk driving over the upcoming Labor Day weekend as part of the annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) announced the details of the DUI enforcement initiative in a recent press release.

Details Of This Year’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Initiative

The 20-day DUI enforcement initiative began on August 18th in New York and is scheduled to run through September 4th. Both local and state law enforcement agencies are participating in this year’s initiative which targets intoxicated drivers throughout New York.

The campaign coincides with the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend which has historically been a high-risk weekend for drunk driving incidents throughout the nation.

What Is The Goal of The DUI Enforcement Initiative?

DWI Vehicle Stop In New YorkThe goal of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is to discourage individuals from driving while intoxicated by providing high-visibility DUI enforcement along with educational resources.

“Safety comes first for the New York State Police – for our troopers and the drivers and passengers we serve on New York State’s roadways,” said NYS Police Superintendent George P. Beach II.

“Each year there are needless tragedies and victims left behind because of the decisions made by drunk and drug-impaired drivers. Through education and enforcement, State Police are working to make New York’s roads safer by discouraging, detecting, and arresting impaired motorists.”

Free “Have A Plan” App Helps Get You Home Safely

Smartphone In HandOfficials are also encouraging New Yorkers to download the free “Have a Plan” app made available by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Counsel and the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation.

The free app – available for Apple, Android, and Windows smart phones – helps people find and call a taxi or ride sharing service to get them home safely. The mobile app also includes educational resources on alcohol consumption and DWI laws in the State of New York.

“In New York, we strive every day to reduce the number of drunken drivers on the road,” said Terri Egan, DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner and Acting GTSC Chair. “The ‘Have a Plan’ app is a wonderful resource that enables you to learn about the dangers and consequences of drunken driving. More importantly, it enables you and your friends to decide what you’re going to do to get home safely before you begin your celebration.”

Penalties & Consequences of Drunk Driving In New York

Many drivers are aware of the standard penalties associated with a DWI conviction, but there are other consequences of drunk driving that are often overlooked. This year’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over initiative is focusing on educating drivers about the other consequences.

“In addition to the jail time, fines and public embarrassment of a drunken driving conviction, motorists should also consider the other potential impacts. Losing your license can affect your ability to find work, your insurance costs will rise dramatically, and you may find your life permanently changed in ways you never anticipated,” Egan said. “You could also hurt or kill yourself or someone else. All of that can be prevented by simply making a plan before you go out.”
